In the context of the third national German research program (LUFO III) the concept for a new trimmable horizontal stabilizer actuator (THSA) is investigated. The project aims to an improvement of maintainability and automatic testing sequence for the mechanical integrity of the load carrying devices. This article considers a trimmable horizontal tailplane, driven by two active-parallel operating ballscrews , which are autonomous synchronized due to the particular arrangement of two differential gearboxes. Control strategies for this new actuation concept and an approach for monitoring the THSA are presented.
