This paper is intended to give an overview of current and future research activities in the field of model-based development of control, monitoring and diagnosis concepts for multifunctional fuel cell systems. The challenge for the design of these software systems is given by the complex system architecture. The resulting complexity of the software systems is handled by dividing the design process in steps and the utilization of hierarchical concepts. In order to verify implemented functionalities a virtual integration approach is used. The described model-based development is illustrated by examples.
